I don’t care if it’s in between holiday concerts, crazy work hours, open houses, or gift shopping. Find something you love to do, and do it! Maybe you grab a spin class or go walking. Maybe you do a few downward dogs before finishing up the errands. Go for a run or do Pilates before taking care of everyone else. This time of year can be a joyful one, but also one filled with grief–the kind we have as individuals and that we share as families. The healing process only gets underway when we address that grief. So I thought I would share my story in hopes that it can help all of us to add to that healing.
I used to live what most people would consider an ideal life. I had a loving and handsome husband, three beautiful daughters, and a lucrative and fulfilling career. We lived in a beautiful house, went on many family vacations each year, and generally felt blessed and happy. But everything changed within moments of waking up one haunting morning 10 years ago.
Summer’s here and we’re surrounded by fresh fruit and veggies that are in season! BUT… instead you find yourself overindulging in not-so-healthy foods. You’re not alone. Maybe it’s the BBQ, picnics, drinks, or just eating more on vacation. Instead of feeling light, you feel bloated, hung over, and far from your best self. Believe me, we’ve all been there!
There’s no black and white when it comes to our well being. Going to extremes is never good for anyone emotionally or physically. We all know that eating healthy foods (meaning whole, fresh, and not processed) is the way to go, but there are times when we indulge too much and overeat, or just plain make the wrong choices. I’m here to say it is OKAY to do that sometimes. Let go of the guilt; it doesn’t help. The way we live should never be all or nothing. When we fall off the wagon, we just need to get back on track to find the right balance.
So how do we do that? It’s about nourishing your soul.
Changing ourselves can be an incredibly hard thing—especially if we’ve faced (or are facing) a big life challenge that has us feeling scared and/or stuck.
To me, cleansing has come to be synonymous with starting over—nutritionally and physically, sure, but also mentally and philosophically, too.
I know how powerful it can be to start over. Years ago I went through a tragedy myself, and eventually, after a long period of intense sadness and feelings of helplessness, I started changing my habits.
